Why Learn Poker Terminology?

Poker has its own unique language. To study effectively using tracking software, solvers, or coaching tools like DEEPFOLD, you must understand the terminology. This glossary covers the most critical terms you'll encounter.

A-C

3-Bet

The second raise preflop. (The big blind is the first bet, an initial raise is the 2-bet, and re-raising that is the 3-bet).

4-Bet

A re-raise over a 3-bet.

AF (Aggression Factor)

A HUD stat calculating how aggressive a player is postflop. (Bets + Raises) / Calls. A higher number indicates an aggressive player.

Ante

A forced bet required from all players before the hand begins, common in tournaments and some cash games.

Backdoor

Making a hand on the turn and river. For example, having two spades on the flop and catching spades on both turn and river to make a "backdoor flush."

Bad Beat

Losing a hand when you were a heavy mathematical favorite when the chips went in.

Blockers

Cards in your hand that make it impossible (or less likely) for your opponent to hold certain hands. For example, holding the A♠ makes it impossible for your opponent to have the nut flush.

Board (or Community Cards)

The shared cards dealt face-up in the middle of the table (Flop, Turn, River).

Button (BTN)

The position of the dealer. It is the most advantageous position because you act last on every postflop betting round.

C-Bet (Continuation Bet)

A bet made on the flop by the player who was the last aggressor preflop.

Check-Raise

Checking when it's your turn, and then raising after an opponent bets. A powerful and deceptive move.

Cold Call

Calling a raise (and potentially a 3-bet) without having previously invested any money in the pot.

Connectors

Cards of consecutive rank (e.g., 8-7 or J-T). If they are the same suit, they are "Suited Connectors" (e.g., 8♠ 7♠).

Cutoff (CO)

The position immediately to the right of the Button. The second-best position at the table.

D-F

Donk Bet

Betting out of position into the player who had the betting lead on the previous street, rather than checking to them.

Double Barrel

Betting both the flop and the turn as the aggressor.

Downswing

A prolonged period of losing due to bad variance (bad luck).

Draw

A hand that is not currently made but has the potential to improve to a strong hand with future community cards (e.g., having 4 spades and needing one more for a flush).

Equity

Your mathematical share of the pot based on your probability of winning the hand.

EV (Expected Value)

The average amount of money a specific play expects to win or lose in the long run. +EV means the play is profitable; -EV means it loses money.

Floating

Calling a bet on the flop with a weak hand with the intention of taking the pot away on a later street if the opponent checks.

Flop

The first three community cards dealt simultaneously.

Fold Equity

The value gained from the likelihood that your opponent will fold to your bet or raise.

G-L

GTO (Game Theory Optimal)

A mathematically balanced strategy that cannot be exploited by opponents. Solvers output GTO strategies.

Hijack (HJ)

The position immediately to the right of the Cutoff.

HUD (Heads Up Display)

Software that overlays statistics about your opponents next to their avatars while you play.

ICM (Independent Chip Model)

In tournaments, a mathematical model used to convert tournament chips into real money equity.

Implied Odds

The ratio of the current size of the pot plus the bets you expect to win on future streets, compared to the cost of your current call.

Iso (Isolation Raise)

Raising after one or more players have limped, with the goal of forcing everyone else out to play a heads-up pot against the weaker limper.

Limp

Entering the pot preflop by simply calling the big blind rather than raising. (Generally considered a strategic mistake).

M-P

MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency)

The mathematical percentage of your range that you must defend (call or raise) to prevent your opponent from profitably bluffing you with any two cards.

Nuts

The best possible hand at any given moment given the board texture.

Overbet

A bet that is larger than the current size of the pot.

Pocket Pair

Being dealt two cards of the same rank (e.g., K♣ K♥).

Position

Your seat relative to the dealer button. Having "position" means acting last postflop.

Pot Control

The tactic of keeping the pot size small relative to the effective stack, typically played with marginal made hands like weak top pair, second pair, or medium pocket pairs where you're uncertain of where you stand. Common moves: checking behind in position, calling instead of raising for thin value, choosing a 1/3-pot bet over a 2/3-pot. Pot Control Strategy: When and How to Slow Down the Hand

Pot Odds

The mathematical ratio of the size of the pot to the cost of a contemplated call. For example, if the pot is $100 and you have to call $50, your pot odds are 2:1.

R-V

RFI (Raise First In)

Being the first player to enter the pot preflop by making a raise.

River

The fifth and final community card dealt.

Set

Three of a kind made by having a pocket pair in your hand and one matching card on the board. (Distinct from "Trips," which uses two board cards and one hole card).

Showdown

The final phase of the hand where remaining players reveal their cards to determine the winner.

Solver

Powerful software that calculates Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategies for specific poker situations.

Squeeze

Making a 3-bet after there has been a raise and one or more callers.

Turn

The fourth community card dealt.

UTG (Under the Gun)

The position immediately to the left of the big blind. The player UTG must act first preflop.

Value Bet

A bet made when you believe you have the best hand, intended to get called by worse hands.

Variance

The statistical measure of downswings and upswings in your bankroll due to luck. Variance is inherent in poker.

VPIP (Voluntarily Put In Pot)

A HUD stat showing the percentage of hands a player chooses to play preflop (excluding forced blind postings).
