Advanced Pot Odds: Implied Odds, Reverse Implied Odds & Multi-Street Math
Take your pot odds knowledge to the next level — master implied odds calculations, understand reverse implied odds traps, and think in terms of multi-street equity.
Beyond Basic Pot Odds
Basic pot odds compare what you need to call versus the pot. But advanced players think about the full picture — what happens on future streets, how much more you can win (or lose), and whether your draw is truly as strong as it appears.
Implied Odds Deep Dive
Implied odds = the extra money you expect to win on future streets when you complete your draw.
Calculating Implied Odds
Effective formula: Is your expected gain (pot + future bets) worth the current call?
Example:
- Pot: $60. Opponent bets $40. You call $40.
- You have a flush draw (9 outs, ~18% to hit on turn)
- Basic pot odds: 40/140 = 28.5% needed — you only have 18%. Fold?
- But if you hit: opponent likely puts in another $80-120 on turn/river
- Total expected gain: $60 + $40 + $80 to $120 = $180-220
- Revised: 40/220 = 18.2% — now your 18% is very close. Marginal call.
When Implied Odds Are Excellent
- Deep stacks (100BB+)
- Disguised draws (sets from small pairs, straight draws with connectors)
- Aggressive opponents who'll pay off when you hit
- Position (you control the pot sizing)
When Implied Odds Are Poor
- Short stacks (25-40BB)
- Obvious draws (4-flush on board)
- Tight opponents who fold to aggression
- Out of position (harder to extract value)
Reverse Implied Odds
Reverse implied odds = the money you LOSE when you make your hand but it's second-best.
The Classic Trap: Dominated Flush Draws
You hold 7♠ 6♠. Board: A♠ K♠ 8♦ 3♣. You have a flush draw with 9 outs.
But here's the problem: if a spade hits, any opponent holding A♠x or K♠x has a higher flush. You could make your hand and still lose a huge pot.
High Reverse Implied Odds Situations
- Small flush draws (below Q-high)
- Bottom end of straights (holding 5-6 on a 6-7-8 board)
- Non-nut draws in 3-bet pots
- Top pair weak kicker (e.g., A3 on A-K-7 board)
Multi-Street Planning
Advanced pot odds thinking isn't just about one decision — it's about planning your entire hand.
Example: Betting Three Streets for Value
- You have A♠ K♠ on K♦ 7♥ 3♣
- Flop: Bet 33% pot (build pot)
- Turn (brick): Bet 66% pot (grow it)
- River (brick): Bet 75% pot (extract maximum)
Each sizing is calculated so that your total value extraction is optimized across all three streets.
The Breakeven Formula
For any bet you face: Breakeven % = Risk / (Risk + Reward)
| Bet Size (% of pot) | Breakeven % |
|---|---|
| 25% | 20% |
| 33% | 25% |
| 50% | 33% |
| 66% | 40% |
| 75% | 43% |
| 100% (pot) | 50% |
| 150% | 60% |
