What Is a Donk Bet?

A donk bet is a bet made by the out-of-position player into the preflop aggressor, instead of checking and letting them c-bet. Traditionally seen as weak play, modern solvers have shown it's correct in specific scenarios.

When Donk Betting Is Correct

1. Board Dramatically Favors Your Range

When the flop/turn significantly benefits the caller's range over the raiser's.

Example: You call from BB vs BTN open. Flop: 7♠ 6♥ 5♣. This is a BB-favoring board — you have more 87, 98, 54, sets of 77/66/55 than the BTN.

2. Turn Card Shifts Range Advantage

When the turn card helps your range more than your opponent's.

Example: After calling flop c-bet on A♠ 9♥ 5♦, the turn is 9♣. Now you have more 9x hands (97s, 98s, 96s) than the raiser.

3. Very Coordinated Low Boards

Boards like 6♠ 5♥ 4♣ or 8♠ 7♦ 5♣ — the BB calling range crushes these.

Donk Bet Sizing

  • Small donk (25-33% pot): Range donk on heavily favorable boards
  • Medium donk (50-66% pot): Specific value + bluff combinations
  • Large donk (75%+ pot): Polarized strong hands and draws

Donk Bet Range Construction

Value Donk Hands

  • Strong made hands on range-favorable boards
  • Sets (especially on low boards)
  • Two pair combinations
  • Nut draws that want to build the pot

Bluff Donk Hands

  • Gutshots and combo draws (equity when called)
  • Hands that want to deny equity from opponent's checking range
  • Low pocket pairs that benefit from folding out overcards

When NOT to Donk Bet

  • Board favors the raiser (A-K-x, A-Q-x boards)
  • Your range can't credibly represent strength
  • Against opponents who always c-bet (let them bet for you)
  • You don't have a balanced donk range (doing it only with strong hands is transparent)

The Psychology of Donk Betting

Many opponents view donk bets as weak/recreational. This means:

  • They raise donk bets liberally → great for trapping
  • They don't give donk bets credit → more value extraction

Common Donk Bet Mistakes

  1. Donking on boards that favor the raiser — A-K-x is not a donking board
  2. Only donking with strong hands — Unbalanced = exploitable
  3. Not understanding range dynamics — Donking randomly is still bad
  4. Donking too frequently — It should be situational, not default

💡 Donk betting separates modern players from old-school. Used correctly, it's a significant edge.
