The 10 Most Costly Preflop Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
Stop bleeding chips before the flop — identify and correct the most common preflop errors that plague recreational and intermediate players alike.
Why Preflop Matters More Than You Think
Your preflop decisions set the trajectory for the entire hand. A bad preflop decision puts you in losing spots postflop no matter how well you play later. Fix your preflop leaks and your overall win rate improves dramatically.
Mistake #1: Playing Too Many Hands
The #1 leak at every level. Playing 30-40% of hands from UTG is a recipe for disaster. Your range should be tightest in early position and widest on the button.
Fix: Use a preflop chart. DEEPFOLD's RFI Training will drill correct ranges into your muscle memory.
Mistake #2: Limping Into Pots
Calling the big blind (limping) is almost always worse than raising or folding. Limping:
- Gives up initiative
- Lets opponents see cheap flops with marginal hands
- Creates multiway pots where your edge disappears
Fix: If a hand is worth playing, it's worth raising. If it's not worth raising, fold.
Mistake #3: Not 3-Betting Enough
Many players only 3-bet with AA/KK. This is way too tight and makes your 3-bets easy to read.
Fix: Build a balanced 3-bet range that includes value hands (QQ+, AK) AND bluffs (suited connectors, suited aces like A5s).
Mistake #4: Calling 3-Bets Too Wide
Facing a 3-bet, many players call with too many speculative hands out of position.
Fix: Against a 3-bet, you should mostly 4-bet or fold. Flatting is acceptable in position with hands that play well postflop (medium pairs, suited broadways).
Mistake #5: Inconsistent Raise Sizing
Raising 4x with AA and 2x with 87s tells observant opponents exactly what you have.
Fix: Use a standard size (2.5-3x BB) regardless of your hand. Add 1BB per limper if applicable.
Mistake #6: Ignoring Position Completely
Playing KJo from UTG the same way as from the BTN is a critical error.
Fix: Your range from UTG should be ~15%. From BTN, ~40-45%. Position awareness is non-negotiable.
Mistake #7: Cold-Calling Too Much
Cold-calling (calling a raise without having initiative) is often the worst option, especially from the blinds.
Fix: See a raise? Either 3-bet or fold. Cold-calling should be reserved for specific spots with specific hands.
Mistake #8: Not Adjusting to Table Dynamics
Using the same ranges whether the table is tight-passive or loose-aggressive is a missed opportunity.
Fix: Against tight players, steal more. Against loose players, tighten up and play for value.
Mistake #9: Overvaluing Suited Cards
Q4s is not a good hand just because it's suited. Being suited adds only about 3-4% equity.
Fix: Suited-ness helps, but it doesn't rescue bad hands. K2s from UTG is still a fold.
Mistake #10: Playing from the Small Blind Incorrectly
The SB is the worst postflop position. Many players call too many raises from the SB.
Fix: From the SB, adopt a polarized approach: 3-bet strong hands, fold garbage, minimize flat calls.
