Continuation Bet Strategy: When, How Much, and Why
A deep dive into c-bet strategy — learn when to fire, when to check, and how to size your continuation bets based on board texture.
What is a Continuation Bet?
A continuation bet (c-bet) is a bet made on the flop by the preflop aggressor. You raised preflop, got called, and now you bet the flop — that's a c-bet.
C-bets are profitable because:
- The preflop raiser has a range advantage on most boards
- Opponents miss the flop ~66% of the time
- It maintains your initiative and puts pressure on marginal hands
C-Bet Sizing Strategy
Small C-Bet (25-33% pot)
When: Dry, low boards (e.g., K♠ 7♦ 2♣) Why: You can bet your entire range cheaply. Small sizing achieves the same goal as large sizing on these boards.
Medium C-Bet (50-66% pot)
When: Medium-texture boards (e.g., A♠ 9♥ 5♦) Why: Standard sizing that balances value and protection.
Large C-Bet (75-100% pot)
When: Wet, coordinated boards (e.g., J♠ T♥ 8♠) Why: You need to charge draws and protect your value hands.
When NOT to C-Bet
Not every flop deserves a c-bet. Check when:
- The board heavily favors the caller's range (e.g., you open from UTG, BB calls, flop comes 8♠ 7♥ 6♠)
- You're in a multiway pot — Your c-bet needs to get through multiple opponents
- You have a hand that benefits from checking — Sets and two pairs on dry boards can check to induce bluffs
C-Bet by Position
| Spot | Suggested Frequency |
|---|---|
| IP vs BB (heads-up) | 65-75% |
| OOP vs BTN (heads-up) | 40-55% |
| Multiway pot | 30-40% |
