Check, Bet, Raise, Call, Fold: Mastering Every Poker Action
A clear breakdown of every action available to you at the poker table — when to use each one and the strategic thinking behind every decision.
The 5 Core Poker Actions
Every time it's your turn, you choose from a limited set of actions. Understanding when and why to use each one is fundamental.
1. Check ✅
What: You pass the action to the next player without putting money in. When available: Only when no one has bet in the current round. Strategic use:
- With medium hands to control pot size
- To trap with very strong hands (slow-playing)
- To see a free card with drawing hands
2. Bet 💰
What: You put money into the pot when no one else has bet in this round. Strategic use:
- Value bet: You have a strong hand and want worse hands to call
- Bluff: You have a weak hand but want to make better hands fold
- Protection: You have a vulnerable hand and want to deny free cards to draws
3. Raise ⬆️
What: You increase the size of an existing bet. Strategic use:
- For value with strong hands (extracting maximum chips)
- As a bluff to represent strength
- To isolate a weak player (isolation raise)
- To gain information about opponents' hand strength
4. Call 📞
What: You match the current bet to stay in the hand. Strategic use:
- With drawing hands that have correct pot odds
- To keep weaker hands in the pot behind you
- With medium-strength hands where raising is too much but folding is too tight
5. Fold 🚫
What: You discard your hand and forfeit any chips already in the pot. Strategic use:
- When your hand is too weak relative to the bet you face
- When pot odds don't justify continuing
- When you're certain you're beaten
Sizing Your Bets: The Quick Guide
| Situation | Recommended Sizing |
|---|---|
| Preflop open raise | 2.5x–3x BB |
| Continuation bet (dry board) | 25–33% pot |
| Continuation bet (wet board) | 66–75% pot |
| Value bet (river) | 50–75% pot |
| Polarized bet | 75–150% pot |
The Most Common Beginner Mistake
Calling too much, raising too little. New players tend to call passively when they should be raising for value or folding to cut losses. The best players are selective but aggressive — they either have a clear reason to raise and put pressure on, or they fold and wait for a better spot.
💡 Mantra: "Raise or fold" is a better default than "call and hope." Every call needs a clear reason.
